LINUX Box LB3 - Intelligent IO Ethernet Solution - New

One device - Numerous possibilities

Embedded System with digital and analog IO's
The LINUX Box LB3 is a full-fledged industrial PC with a pre-installed Linux operating system and a DIN rail case mounting design. The LB3 has been specially conceived for installation in switching cabinets of machines, plants, and buildings. Windows CE or Free Dos can also be used as alternatives to the Linux operating system. In its basic version the LB3 is equipped with 128MB RAM and an additional 128MB ROM (CompactFlash) which can be optionally expanded. Due to its numerous integrated interfaces such as USB, Ethernet, serial/parallel interfaces or the digital IO´s and the possibility to extend IO's with an IO Extension Box, the LB3's function range covers most of the applications frequently requested by customers. Among them are notable applications such as:

  • Telecontrol devices (RTU's / Remote Terminal Units)
  • Log converters
  • Offline / Online - data loggers
  • Offline / Online - event loggers
  • Property management systems
  • Network routers
  • Platform for individual solutions
  • customer-specific implementation

Speacial feature: Extended temperature range from -40° to +70° Celsius.

Extended temperature range

Due to its extremely wide temperature range from -40° to +70° Celsius, the USB to I/O Adapter can be operated under extreme temperature conditions. This enables you to use the USB I/O in the most adverse rugged environments.

Compact, rugged, versatile ...

The Embedded System LINUX Box LB3 is especially convincing due to its extensive applicability to harsh industrial environments.
Enclosed in its rugged, compact DIN rail casing (W,H,D: 160/58/90mm), it can endure wide temperature ranges (from -40° to +70° C) and bears a considerable array of interfaces. Due to its high-performance hardware contrasted with its incredibly low power input (< 3 Watts), the LB3 can said to be an excellent allround performer especially suitable for the automation and communication sectors. By means of the IO Extension Box (for IO extension), the LB3 is also extensible to up to 22 IO modules with 8 x digital INs/OUTs or 5 x analog INs/OUTs for each, respectively. The connection is established simply through the the available USB interface.

By using open source operating systems (Linux or Free Dos) there are no license costs involved, and own developments (individual programming) can be implemented with low costs. The use of Windows CE as operating system is also possible. Of course, ipcas GmbH also develops project-specific, customized applications.

Automatizing, converting, controling ...

The LINUX Box LB3 serves as an ideal hardware platform for your own individual or customized developments.
The LB3 uses its digital IO's to record measuring data for subsequent processing. The IO extension (IO Extension Box) also enables the reception and processing of analog signals. By using special log converter software, you can also deploy the LB3 as a log converter. It is thereby possible for two systems with different log types to communicate with each other. Thus you can control, for example, telecontrol units via LAN.
By using the two Ethernet connections (RJ45) you can also use it as a network router.

Platform for individual solutions

(individual programming)

Possible application areas:

  • MDA/PDA (machine data acquisition / production data acquisition)
  • Industrial automation
  • Telemetry
  • Interface conversion
  • Building automation
  • Data/Event logger, etc.

Typical features:

  • Open source operating system
    (Linux 2.4 / 2.6)
  • Extensions (CF card holder) available
  • Costumer-specific IO module assignment
  • Freely programmable
  • Low power consumption ? passive cooling

Telecontrol device

(RTU = Remote Terminal Unit) …

…Used to telecontrol manufacturing machines with digital/analog inputs and outputs.

Typical features:

  • Integrated IPConv software from the company IPCOMM GmbH supports numerous protocols (Modbus, IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61850, OPC DA XML, etc.)
  • Many more protocols available
  • Extension modules available
  • User and configuration interface available through the standard browser
  • Good price-performance ratio
  • Integrated USB, RS232, RS485, and LAN interfaces

Excellently equipped …

The highly compact DIN rail mounted PC is excellently equipped for the use of various currently used interfaces. The LB3 features four digital inputs, four digital outputs, two serial (RS232) and two parallel (RS485) interfaces for each as well as four USB ports and two 100Mbit/s LAN connections. It is supplied by an industrial standarad voltage of 24V DC (9V – 34V DC) and contains a standard 128MB RAM. The 128MB ROM CompactFlash card (permanent storage) of the basic version can be extended. These storage media are not only smaller than legacy hard disks, but they are also much more robust, since they do not contain any rotating parts. The LB3 is equipped with a Vortex 86SX processor with quite a sizable CPU performance (300MHz) for an Embedded PC, considering its extreme temperature range and its fanless operation.
