Ethernet Standalone DCF77/GPS TimeServer - ipNTP

Real-time in network

The ipNTP standalone time server is able to transfer DCF77/GPS time information to computers, controllers, and other time-critical applications via Ethernet.

All components in a TCP/IP network can be synchronized through an SNTP protocol with the time signal transmitter in Mainflingen near Frankfurt am Main/Germany (DCF77) or with the global satellite navigation system (GPS).

Application

Accurate time solutions are required for processing cycles, flow controls, personal data systems, time data collection (TDC), or error loggings. By using the network protocol SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol - RFC 2030) and TCP/IP you also are able to guarantee platform independence in heterogeneous networks.

The DCF77 Radio Clock is very compactly installed and connected to the Ethernet (10BaseT). The DCF77 antenna (active DCF77 antenna with approx. 2.50 m cable length) or, alternatively, a GPS receiver that feeds time signals into the time server for further processing is attached externally.

Parameterizing

Parameterizing the time server is performed locally within the Windows NT4/2000/XP interface via Ethernet. The provided driver CD contains a setup program for the configuration software.

NTP Server - Information

NTP (Network Time Protocol) - Server Configuration
N = Network; T = Time; P = Protocol

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to synchronize a client with other computers or external clocks via Internet/Intranet. The primary NTP time servers are synchronized as accurately as possible with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) using external interval timers. The NTP clients in turn are able to synchronize their time with indicated servers by means of NTP commands.

DCF77 - General Information

D = German; C = long-wave transmitter; F = Frankfurt; 77,5 kHz = carrier frequency

The DCF77 Radio Clock receives the official time of the Federal Republic of Germany from the Federal German Physical-Technical Institute in Braunschweig (PTB) and passes it on to the computers and systems through various interfaces. A long-term PTB calibration accuracy of 1 x 10 E-13 per week is achieved by radio-synchronizing the DCF77 transmitter in Mainflingen near Frankfurt/Main (50 01 N, 9 00 0). Due to this high accuracy, only that time is recognized as valid in the Federal Republic of Germany (Federal Law Gazette 42/1978, page 110).

The DCF77 signal is transmitted continuously except for short interruptions due to maintenance or technical errors. The DCF77 transmitter is switched off at the place of transmission during thunderstorms.

GPS General Information

(Global Positioning System)
Various satellites orbit around the earth on different courses at a height of approx. 20,000 km, each containing an atomic clock (minimum accuracy: 1 x 10 E-12) permanently transmitting the exact time and course data. The GPS receiver registers the data from a maximum number of 6 satellites, and thereby calculates its own position.

Once the position has been computed, the data running times of the individual satellites can be determined. The GPS world time in the time server is defined on the basis of this data and is re-transmitted accurately through an adjustable quartz balance.
