Serial-Ethernet Converter networks a Simatic S7 (PLC) - without PPI cable
Installation and configuration instructions
Hardware components: Simatic S7-200, test motor (output simulator),
RS485 cable (Sub-D plugs), ipEther232 24V DIN-Rail, 24V power pack, network cable
1. Wiring
- Mount an connect the RS485 Kabel
- Connect ipEther232 (Serial-Ethernet Converter) with power pack and network cable (Ethernet)
- Connect ipEther232 (Serial-Ethernet Converter) to the Simatic S7 with a PPI cable
Cable termination is required for RS485 connections in termination networks in order to enforce quiescent levels on bus systems whenever no data transmitters are active. The termination network is set via jumper blocks 6, 7 and 8 (integrated in the ipEther485 casing).

2. ipEther232 Configtool parameters
- The ipEther232 (Serial-Ethernet Converter) must respond to the same IP range as the user PC does. You can change the IP with a right mouse-click on "ipEther_232"
"Set IP".

- Under "Properties"
"RS232", select the COM port
- Select "Half Duplex (RS485)". All other functions in "Properties"
"RS232" will be hidden automaticly.

3. STEP 7 manager parameters
- Click "Communications" in the left menu
- "Set PG/PC Interface"
- At "Interface Parameter Assignment Used:", select "PC/PPI cable(PPI)"
- "Properties..."
- Assign COM port at "Connection to:", and deactivate "Modem connection"
- At "PPI", deactivate "Multi Master Network"
- Update at ""Communication"
