How can I make a serial device Ethernet-capable (TCP/IP-capable)?
You can do this with an ipEther232.PPP. Here you must configure PPP (under Linux: pppd; under Windows: Telecommunications connection).
P.S.: If only the serial device can be accessed, you may also use an ipEther232 (virtual Com port) instead.
